What Are Antiestrogens ?

Antiestrogens, or estrogen antagonists, as the name suggests are a class of substances that are against estrogens. In other words, they are a class of drugs that prevent estrogens such as estradiol from exerting their biological effects in the human body. Antiestrogens work by blocking the estrogen receptor and inhibiting or suppressing estrogen production. Bodybuilders use antiestrogens to prevent estrogenic side effects.

Estrogens are female sex hormones that are synthesized by the ovaries and regulate specific sexual functions. There are two estrogens (found in both the female and male bodies). The most powerful is Beta 17-estradiol. The second, weaker, is called estrone. Estrogens and testosterone have a synergistic relationship - without their correlation, muscles would not grow. People who take anabolic steroids have two options: to avoid steroids that turn into estrogens or to administer anti-estrogens.

There are cases when antiestrogens are used during a cycle with anabolic steroids and cases when they are used after a cycle with steroids, more precisely in post-cycle therapy.
